Restore Integrity To American Politics

Restore Integrity—Protect American Rights and Our Democracy
After the November 2nd, 2010, election returns, Representative John A. Boehner said, “The American people’s voice was heard at the ballot box...”. But Rep Boehner knows this is not so. He knows that the ballot box merely reflected the successful disinformation cam‐paign, consisting of lies and Orwellian double speak, perpetrated, by him and other right-wing individuals and organizations, against uninformed and, consequently, easily manipulated voters.

Since when is it okay to outright lie to tens of millions of American citizens about issues of national importance? Since when can politicians say anything they want to with impunity? If Congressman Rangel can be brought before the House Ethics Committee on relatively minor charges, then it's more than justified to investigate Rep John Boehner, Sarah Palin, and others. Rep. Boehner and these others must be held accountable. We need to prevail upon the Office of Congressional Ethics, en masse, to investigate the unethical activities of various right-wing individuals and organizations, including, but certainly not limited to, Fox News, Citizen's United, Liberty Central, Americans For Prosperity, John A Boehner, Koch brothers, Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Morris, and Karl Rove.
Are They Just Exercising Their Right To Free Speech?
This disinforming speech can't easily be construed as people exercising their right under the First Amendment, as there exists legal precedent (Schenck vs U.S., Brandenburg vs Ohio, and the Espionage Act) that attempts to define constitutionally protected speech. This legal precedent does not support spreading disinformation via any public medium, when the apparent intent is to undermine the U.S. government. The right-wing's mass media disinformation campaign has not only attempted to undermine the current government—it has succeeded, by subverting the election process with disinformation and extradinary levels of funding from covert sources! Moreover, the long-term right-wing Republican agenda appears to support enabling a plutarchy, the antithesis of the U.S. Constitution and of our Democratic Republic. Consequently, there might be a legal basis for bringing these people and their organizations to justice.
Why Are They Subverting Our Election Process?
Prior to the November 2nd, 2010 elections, with Democrats having only 57 Senate seats and 60 needed to prevent a filibuster, GOP leadership deliberately obstructed democratic efforts to solve urgent national problems. Also, for the prior 20 months, they supported a mass media disinformation campaign—notably modeled by Rep John Boehner, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck—to foment angst among uninformed voters. Often they told the public the opposite of what's really true. It was an adversarial and collaborative attempt to discredit the Obama Administration and to transfer GOP responsibility for past policy failures to the Democrats and Obama Administration. The GOP's goal is to regain control of Congress and continue their long-term agenda, along with the failed policies that led to The Great Recession and this economic mess.

The long-term GOP agenda is to give maximum advantage to the very wealthy and to large corporations. American democracy, once "for the people and by the people", threatened by the right-wing Republican's long-term agenda, could easily devolve into a plutarchy, a government by and for large corporations and the extremely wealthy.

Uninformed voters, manipulated by GOP disinformation, are the right-wing Republican's power base.
It gets worse—this is not "politics as usual."
A few ultra-right billionaires and right-leaning corporations are attempting to gain control of Congress, by buying the elections for extremist candidates they support. These candidates are running under the GOP banner, but do not represent moderate Republicans.

This situation became possible last January, 2010, when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Citizen's United vs FEC, ignoring a century of legal opinion on campaign financing. This ruling a) enables covert donations of unlimited funds to tax-exempt political organizations for campaign ads and thereby b) allows corporations or a wealthy few, for all practical purposes, to potentially buy elections.

In fact, right-wing tax-exempt organizations, such as Citizen's United and Americans For Prosperity (AFP), are receiving huge covert donations, far exceeding campaign funding levels ever before experienced in any election. Some are even out-spending the candidates they support! They are affirming the GOP disinformation and trying to buy control of Congress. Moreover, without exercising critical thinking, disinformed members of The Tea Party and the AFP, who believe they are acting as patriots, are in fact unwitting puppets of the covert donors to these organizations. Ultimately, these organizations are pursuing an agenda that protects the wealthy, big corporations and Wall Street, and that removes existing legislative protection of the rights of all Americans and the environment.

It's no surprise that GOP obstruction included, in September, 2010, blocking the "Disclose Act", which is legislation designed to counter the effects of the Supreme Court decision.

If we fail to elect a strong Democrat majority in Congress, our country will continue to be economically gutted by greedy, unprincipled and predatory capitalists. Many of our rights as Americans—to assured and affordable health insurance, to a clean and safe environment, to the freedom of choice when it comes to pregnancy or a marriage partner, and much more—would almost certainly be legislated away. And American democracy, once "for the people and by the people," will effectively devolve into a plutarchy, a government by and for large corporations and the extremely wealthy, with the country's social agenda driven by a fundamentalist Christian coalition dedicated to dissolving the separation of church and state.
